According to popular culture and folklore, zombies are usually either a corpse awakened with a ravenous appetite or a person bitten by another zombie infected with the “zombie virus.” Unlike many other fictional monsters that often emerge from myth, zombies have a realistic basis, as the idea of zombies originates in Haitian Voodoo culture.
The Greeks were probably the first civilization to be terrified by the living dead, as archaeologists have discovered many ancient graves containing skeletons fixed with rocks and other heavy objects, in order to prevent the bodies from coming back to life.
Zombie folklore has also been around for centuries in Haiti, and is said to have originated in the 17th century when slaves were brought from West Africa to work on Haiti’s sugar cane plantations. These slaves were treated in an extremely brutal manner and were eager for freedom, so the idea of zombies essentially embodies the horrific ordeal of slavery.
